Lower Speed Limits for Some Dunedin Roads

Lower Speed Limits for Some Dunedin Roads

Dunedin, 17 December 2014 – Speed limits are going to drop for 12 roads around the city and 40km/h variable zones will be introduced outside five schools for safety reasons.

The Dunedin City Council on Monday approved an amendment to the Dunedin City Speed Limits Bylaw, which will come into effect from early next year. Signs will be put up to notify motorists of the changes.

Lower speed limits for the following roads will come into force from 1 February:
• John Wilson Ocean Drive, Logan Park Drive, Magnet Street, Factory Road, Wingatui Road, Rutherford Road, Portobello Road, St Ronans Road, Rosehill Road, Bruce Road, Friends Hill Road and Halfway Bush Road.

These roads have a variety of speed limits – 50km/h, 70km/h and 100km/h. These will change to 30km/h, 50km/h and 70km/h respectively.

From 1 March, variable 40km/h school zones will come into force on sections of four roads outside five schools. They are:
• Bay View Road (King’s and Queen’s High Schools), Kaikorai Valley Road (Kaikorai Valley College), Helensburgh Road (Wakari School) and South Road (Carisbrook).

DCC Transportation Engineer Diana Munster says the variable zones mean the speed limit on the particular road drops to 40km/h at the start and end of the school day in the area close to the school. The aims include providing a safer road environment outside schools and encouraging children to walk, cycle or ride a scooter to school.

When the draft amendment was put out for public consultation in July, 77 submissions were received. A hearings subcommittee met in September to consider the submissions and put forward a draft amendment to the Council. This was approved at Monday’s Council meeting.
