Get clued up on festive season rubbish and recycling

There’s no change to rubbish and recycling collections over the festive season, except for Christmas Day.

The Christmas Day rubbish and recycling collections will instead take place on Saturday 27 December.

Collections will occur as normal for the following days:

Boxing Day (Friday 26 December)

New Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January 2015)

Day after New Year’s (Friday 2 January 2015)

“Please remember to have your rubbish bags and recycling bins or crates out by
7.30am. It pays to note that collection times may be earlier than usual because
there’ll be less bags out over the holiday period, so our collection team will get around faster” says Allan Davey, waste operations manager.

“We’ll dispose of dead organic Christmas trees in the new year. Please ensure they are out on your normal rubbish collection day by 7.30am, during the week starting Monday 5 January 2015.”

In some instances trees may not be collected on the day they are placed out, and it may be a few days after. “It is important that you place your tree out on your normal collection day as our team will be moving through the City during that week,” says Allan.

The trees will be shredded and composted.

Transfer stations are open during the Christmas and New Year period as follows:

Ashhurst Transfer Station:

Open as usual, Tuesday 1pm – 3pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm

Bunnythorpe Transfer Station:

Open as usual, Saturday 10am – 4pm

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
