A man's body has been recovered from the water at the mouth of the Waimea River in the Waimea Inlet this afternoon.

Police, LandSAR volunteers, Coastguard and surf lifesavers have been involved in the search sparked when a fisherman got into difficulty yesterday afternoon.

The body was located at 12.25pm by members of the Police Dive Squad very close to where the man was last seen at the Waimea river entrance to the estuary.

The body is yet to be formally identified.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.
