Serious Assault - Waikato

Serious Assault - Waikato

Waikato, 24 December 2014 - Hamilton Police are currently investigating a serious assault that occurred last evening in a Te Rapa bar.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Mortimore of the Hamilton CIB said "a young woman waiting to transport family home was hit in the face by a large beer bottle. A review of the CCTV footage shows a male forcefully throwing a bottle of beer which struck the woman in the face. The woman sustained significant injuries.

The victim was taken to Waikato Hospital and has subsequently been discharged.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Mortimore said, "this is a sad event whereby an innocent bystander has been badly hurt, caused by what would appear to be a clear example of over indulgence in alcohol. Police want people to enjoy the festive period but to carefully consider how they are drinking."

"We encourage people to be aware of family and friends and the effects of alcohol consumption, particularly upon judgement and actions."

A 22 year old Hamilton male has been arrested and will be appearing in Hamilton District Court today on a charge of Wounding with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm.
