Fatal Crash on SH7 between Culverdon and Hanmer Springs

Fatality following serious crash on SH7 between Culverdon and Hanmer Springs

Emergency services were alerted to a serious crash between a car and a motorcycle near Marble Point on SH7, Mouse Point Road, just before 11am this morning (28 December 2014).

Initial reports are that the motorbike, a green/aqua coloured Harley Davidson, travelling towards Hanmer Springs on SH7 has collided with a car travelling towards Christchurch approximately 2.5km south of Marble Point Winery.

The 56 year old man riding the motorbike was flown to Christchurch Hospital by Westpac Helicopter in a critical condition .

The five occupants of the car, who were all wearing safety belts, were not injured in the crash.

The rider passed away in hospital a short time after his arrival in the Emergency Department.

The death has been referred to the coroner who will determine the cause of death. No further details of the deceased man will be released until next of kin are fully informed.

SH7 was closed between Hanmer Springs and Culverdon for over two hours after the crash while Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit completed a scene examination.

Police investigations into the crash are continuing.

Canterbury Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the distinctive green/aqua coloured Harley Davidson motorcycle while they were travelling along SH7, particularly between Culverdon and Hanmer Springs. Anyone who can help with sightings of the motorcycle are asked to call Police on 03 315 7117 and leave their contact details so an officer can call them back.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Canterbury Police want every journey on our roads to be a safe journey and would like to thank motorists and locals for their patience while the road was closed the heavy traffic to clear.

No further comment will be made until the process to inform next if kin has been completed.
