Shopkeeper threatened with knife - Paihia - Northland

A 40 year old man is in Police custody after a staff member at a supermarket was threatened with a knife in Paihia this morning. Police were called after the man was seen holding a knife to the neck of a 33 year old woman staff member at the Four Square Supermarket at about 10:25am today.

Customers in the shop were made to leave and the door was closed. Police officers managed to enter the shop and speak with the man, who eventually put down the knife and surrendered to the officers. No one was hurt during the incident, although the victim was shaken, and she is receiving ongoing support. Police are interviewing witnesses and the man involved before deciding what, if any charges will be laid . Far North Area Commander, Inspector Wendy Robilliard, thanked members of the public who called Police as the incident unfolded.

Their quick response meant that, Police staff got to the scene immediately.

Inspector Robilliard also praised the officers whose negotiation skills helped the matter to be resolved very quickly and without further incident or injury. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Paihia Police.
