"Serious crash investigation continues"

Taranaki Police supported by the Serious Crash Unit, are continuing to investigate a two-vehicle crash that occurred on State Highway 3 just north of Awakino yesterday (5 January, 2014) evening.

A family of four were in a south bound red Holden vehicle, and two French nationals (a male and female) were travelling in a north bound silver Nissan when the crash occurred.

The family (two adult females and two children) were transported to the Taranaki Base Hospital.

The women remain in a stable condition and the children were assessed by medical staff, as they sustained minor injuries.

The French nationals were airlifted to the Waikato Hospital where the female is in a critical condition, and the male in a serious condition.

"It is unclear at this stage what factors have led to the crash, however we are continuing to make inquiries and appeal for anyone that witnessed the crash, or who was in the area between 5:30pm to 5:45pm and saw either vehicles to contact Police," says Detective Sergeant Gerard Bouterey of the New Plymouth Police.
