Next Upgrades to Childers Road first for 2015

Next Upgrades to Childers Road first for 2015

The next section of Childers Road to undergo an upgrade is set to start construction from nextMonday 12 January.

The two blocks between Grey Street and Peel Street, and along Bright Street in front of the War Memorial Theatre, is one of the first roading construction projects for 2015.

“We are continuing the widening of Childers Road for easier use and to improve safety for road users,” says Dave Hadfield, general manager, Tairawhiti Roads.

“The footpaths will be upgraded and new streetlights installed, car parks will be adjusted and a new cycleway put in.”

Mayor Meng Foon supports the continuous improvement of Childers Road, saying the wider route will be safer for cyclists and commuters crossing the city.

“LED lighting will be used, the new technology will give the street lights brighter output and use less power, saving money,” says Mayor Foon.

A new feature of the design includes the installation of trees along footpaths to enhance the outlook of the area.

The total project will cost $835,000 with $485,000 of the amount government subsidised.

Bright street will also be upgraded which includes the replacement of the existing kerb and channel, footpath and road surface.

“This part of the build will be co-ordinated with the opening of the new War Memorial Theatre in April 2015,” says Dave Hadfield.

“We learnt some lessons from the last Childers Road upgrade which we have taken into account for this project so that delays aren’t repeated.”

“We’ve completed a thorough investigation of underground utilities and will be starting construction of this project as early as possible without affecting holiday makers,” says Mr Hadfield.

“There may be some disruptions as works are carried out, but contractors will endeavour to minimise any inconvenience to road users and neighbouring businesses.”

The upgrades are due to be completed 10 April.

“We ask for your patience during road works, please respect the signage for the safety of all,” says Mayor Foon.
