Whangarei's 'Goldilocks Bridge' Gets Too Hot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Taxpayers’ Union is calling on more transparency from the Whangarei District Council in relation to its $32 million bridge that seizes when Whangarei’s mercury hits 26 degrees. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“The Council is trying to hose down the issue by saying the solution won’t be expensive. If that were true why wasn’t the problem fixed when the Council made changes to the bascule’s lip in January last year?”
“High school students learn that metal expands. Either the Council’s structural engineers forgot that or they were too focused on winning awards for design rather than producing a raising bridge that does its job.”
“Much to the Council's surprise, it's the hot days when people want to go boating. The Council needs to front up and give ratepayers confidence that this debacle can be fixed.”
