Changes to speed limit proposed

Changes to speed limit proposed

Speed limits on several roads within the Queenstown Lakes District are under review.

QLDC is proposing to amend its Speed Limits Bylaw to make changes suggested by the community and other agencies, and will be launching formal public consultation on the proposals next week.

Speed limits are reviewed periodically to take account of development and changes in road usage around the district.

Roads which are proposed to have new speed limits are:
Wakatipu area
• Tucker Beach Road, an 1100m stretch to reduce from 80 to 60 km/hr
• Speargrass Flat Road from the Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road to Slope Hill Road, to reduce from 80 to 70 km/hr
• Arrowtown–Lake Hayes Road from Speargrass Flat Road to 150m south of Malaghans Road including Butel Road, to reduce from 100 – 80 km/hr
• Centennial Ave from McDonnell Road to 50m south of Jopp St, and McDonnell Rd from Centennial Ave to SH6, to reduce from 100 – 80 km/hr
• Whitechapel Road, to reduce from 80 – 50 km/hr
• Streets surrounding the Arrowtown School, to create a 40 km/hr school speed limit
• Kinloch Road from Gorge Creek bridge for 540m south of the bridge, to reduce from 100 – 30 km/hr between 20 December and 10 February each year
• Frankton Marina, to reduce from 50 – 20 km/hr

Wanaka area
• Aubrey Road, 100m in each direction from the intersection with Gunn Rd to reduce from 70 – 50 km/hr
• Plantation Road from 30m north of Kings Drive to 55m each of Totara Terrace, to create a 40 km/hr school speed limit

Corrections to the bylaw will also be made where the roads are already signed at a lower speed limit:
• Shotover Country subdivision, all roads to be 50 km/hr
• Cardrona Valley Road, from 50-90m south of West Meadows Drive
• Speed limits on short sections of seven other “no exit” roads.

Maps showing the roads under consideration are on the Council’s website www.qldc.govt.nz under “Consulting On”, along with a full description of the proposed changes that are up for discussion and the on-line submission form. Copies will also be in Council offices and libraries next week.

Last year, several other roads were put forward when the Council invited people to suggest which areas should have revised speed limits. They included a section of the Arthur’s Point Road; all the streets within Quail Rise; much of the town centres in Queenstown and Arrowtown; and Cemetery Road. Those proposals were not approved by the Council for inclusion in the current round of consultation.

Submissions will close on 27 February and a hearings panel will consider all the feedback at the end of April.
