Queen Elizabeth Park Cycleway route walkover

In 2014 Greater Wellington Regional Council announced its intention to develop a cycleway through Queen Elizabeth Park to enable people to avoid heavy traffic between Raumati and Paekakariki, better link the communities and promote healthy sustainable transport.

The cycleway route has now been identified and the public are invited to join the council’s design team on a walkover, during which the key features of the cycleway will be explained.

“We are inviting people of the region to join us to review the route, which goes through some lovely parts of the park not usually open to the public. The walkover will give people the opportunity to discuss the route and ask questions of its design team,” says GWRC Parks Manager Amanda Cox.

“The cycleway will be developed during 2015 and completed in January next year. It will offer a sustainable transport option for the region and a direct link between the communities of Raumati and Paekakariki and will provide an exciting new dimension to the park.”

The walkover will focus on the northern part of the route from Poplar Avenue to Rainbow Court, an area not currently open to the public. Afterwards there will be opportunity for people to walk the entire 6.6 km route, though no return transport will be available.

The cycleway will be funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency and developed by Greater Wellington Regional Council and is expected to cost approximately $825,000.
