Resurfacing work begins on State Highway 16 at Kumeu

Resurfacing work begins on State Highway 16 at Kumeu

Auckland motorists are being advised of possible delays on State Highway 16, from Trigg Road to Matua Road, from this Monday (19 January) as work gets underway to resurface the highway.

Reconstruction of the highway back in July failed after a storm swept through Auckland immediately following the re-sealing of the road, says the NZ Transport Agency’s Acting Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Mieszko Iwaskow.

“With settled forecast for next week, residents and road users will be relieved to learn our contractors will be back on site from Monday to repair and re-seal the highway. It is expected the work will take four days to complete, with the final seal programmed for the following Wednesday (28 January). All the work is weather dependent.”

He says with width restrictions along this section of the state highway, much of the work will need to be carried out under Stop/Go.

“Work will be restricted to 9am to 3pm to avoid peak travel times and we will aim to complete the work with minimal disruption to traffic.”

The Transport Agency reconstructed the highway early last year, the work finishing in May. Unfortunately, immediately after completion there was heavy rain, resulting in potholes and a weakening of the road surface.

Temporary repairs were carried out to make the road safe during winter and plans put in place to carry out permanent repairs early summer. Repairs started in November but once again were delayed by bad weather. “Our contractors monitored the site throughout the Christmas period to keep the highway safe.”

He says isolated seal patching work is also being carried between Kumeu and Helensville. “We ask motorists to observe the speed restrictions through the area and modify their speed for the conditions.”

The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
