War Artwork Brings Another Perspective

War Artwork Brings Another Perspective

Dunedin (Tuesday, 20 January 2014) – Artist Helen Pollock has created 36 pairs of feet - the equivalent of a small WW1 platoon - to honour fallen soldiers.

The artwork Victory Medal will be displayed at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum from 24 January until May 2015.

Museum Visitor Experience Manager Kirsty Glengarry says the five metre diameter artwork will accompany the exhibition Dunedin’s Great War, which runs until 10 May.

“This artwork provides another perspective into the impacts of war as experienced by ordinary foot-slogging soldiers.”

In describing her work Helen Pollock says, “Thirty five pairs are made from rough unprocessed New Zealand clay; one pair of feet is cast in bronze; enduring and ritualistic as for a recognised hero. This work acknowledges all of those whose lives are lost or blighted by circumstances outside their control; and the consequences that reach across the generations.”

Victory Medal will be on view in the southern end of Toitū, adjacent to the Dunedin’s Great War exhibition.
