Work on Domain Road roundabout (SH2 Tauranga) from 2/2

21 January 2015 | NZ Transport Agency - Waikato & Bay of Plenty

Work on Domain Road roundabout (SH2 Tauranga) starts next week

The Domain Road roundabout will open to traffic in its final form next month, marking another milestone for the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) project.

From Monday February 2, the temporary traffic configuration in place on the roundabout will change permanently, opening two lanes up to Tauranga-bound traffic travelling from Domain Road and Tara Road in Papamoa.

The NZ Transport Agency says work to prepare for the change starts onWednesday January 28.

Motorists are advised to drive with care and expect changes in the area whilst this work is carried out and the traffic management is in place.

On Wednesday January 28 the lane markings approaching the roundabout from Tauranga (eastbound) will be changed - Papamoa and Te Puke-bound traffic will be moved into separate lanes. The existing lane arrows and roundabout markings will be altered to allow for these changes.

Between Wednesday January 28 and Sunday February 1, the current roundabout configuration will remain in place, however work will be occurring next to to the roundabout in preparation for the changes.

The SH2 slip lane from Te Puke to Tauranga will be closed at various times during the day while this work is being carried out and traffic will be diverted through the roundabout.

From 6.00pm on Sunday February 1, major works will be carried out at the roundabout and by 6.00am on Monday morning the new roundabout will be opened to traffic (see attached map).

Editor’s notes

The four-lane Tauranga Eastern Link will run from Te Maunga (near Baypark Stadium) in Tauranga to the existing junction of State Highways 2 and 33 (the Rotorua and Whakatane highways) near Paengaroa. It will be made up of 17km of new road and an upgrade of six kilometres of existing highway. The new highway is expected to open to traffic in 2016.

The Government has identified seven essential state highway projects linked to New Zealand’s economic prosperity. Called the roads of national significance, or RoNS for short, the NZTA is charged with delivering this programme of state highway improvements within the next 10 years. The RoNS programme represents one of New Zealand’s biggest ever infrastructure investments and is a key part of the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan and Government’s Policy Statement for transport.

The seven RoNS projects are based around New Zealand's five largest population centres. The focus is on moving people and freight between and within these centres more safely and efficiently. Other RoNS may be added in future but currently from north to south the seven projects are: Puhoi to Wellsford - SH1,Completing the Western Ring Route, Auckland - SH16, SH18 and SH20, Victoria Park Tunnel, Auckland - SH1, Waikato Expressway - SH1, Tauranga Eastern Link - SH2, Wellington Northern Corridor - SH1, Christchurch Motorways.
