Plan Ahead for Special Licences

If you’re holding an event at Easter that will need a special licence, make sure to plan ahead and apply as soon as possible because applications must be lodged before Waitangi Day.

QLDC Regulatory Manager Lee Webster says that people often leave it late to apply for a special licence, but the law requires all applications to be made at least 20 working days before the event. There are exceptions for unforeseen events such as funerals, but these would not apply to pre-planned events.

Applications for special licences for events planned for Easter must be lodged by 5 February. However, Mr Webster is encouraging people to lodge their applications earlier. Where there is no opposition to an application, the Chair of the District Licensing Committee can make a decision but if there is an objection then there will be a hearing by the full committee.

Mr Webster is also encouraging hotels, bars and entertainment venues to think ahead to the Rugby World Cup in England this September, and start planning any special events they want to run in conjunction with the tournament.

“The games will be held well outside our normal licensing hours, so if venues are intending to screen the matches and serve alcohol then it would be a good idea to get the planning and applications underway early.”
