Water situation update

Water situation update

The water storage dams at Mangapoike still have sufficient water and at this stage council do not need to put water restrictions in place.

Starting Monday 9 February council are undertaking scheduled maintenance of the Waipaoa water treatment plant to make sure things are running smoothly.

“The yearly run up of the treatment plant will take 3 - 5 days,” says water utilities manager, Neville West.

“The annual start up is normally undertaken during summer to coincide when industry are processing, this also allows maintenance checks to be completed while the plant is under load.”

In January 2014 the main water supply pipe from the Mangapoike Dam was damaged by a land slide and forced strict water restrictions on the town water supply.

“As always water is a precious resource, so use it wisely,” recommends Mr West.

“Three month weather predictions do not raise any major concerns requiring any additional early intervention.”

“We are also monitoring river levels in the Waipaoa River so that we can, if possible avoid competing for water with other users.”

“It has been a hot summer this year and temperatures are still exceeding 30 degrees so conserving water is important.”

Residents are encouraged to voluntarily conserve water at all times, tips for saving water can be found atwww.gdc.govt.nz/saving-water/ .
