A section of the
Turanganui river walkway will be closed from Monday 9
February while contractors repair the cracks in the
path.
The cracked section of pavement, along ‘The Cut’ near the statue of James Cook, has been an issue since it was completed in 2012.
“The original contractors Lexmond Contracting in partnership with Aitkens Concrete recently approached Council with an offer to re-lay the section at their own cost,” says project manager Kylie Cranston.
“It is great to see our local contractors recognising the importance of high quality cycle and walkways to our community.”
A 100m section of the path will be closed to the public during construction which will take approximately 2 weeks dependant on good weather.
Site preparation for the Oneroa cycle and walkway from Waikanae to Midway beach will also begin this month.
“A number of weed species will be removed from the back edge of the dune as the first stage in an ongoing project to restore the natural dune habitat.
“An ecological assessment has identified a number of invasive species in the dune which take away habitat from the more sensitive native species.
“A small amount of tree work will also take place to prepare the site for construction,” says Ms Cranston.
Construction of the 1km long combined concrete and timber path is due to start the first week of March and will take just over 3 months to complete.
Mayor Meng Foon asks people for their patience and to respect areas closed for repairs for safety. The adjacent grass reserves will remain open for public use.
“Our cycle and walkways are well used and loved assets for our community. When complete, these 2 walkways will link together connecting our rivers to the beachfront.
“The recently completed Alfred Cox cycle and walkway will allow for a loop in Council’s expanding network.
“These cycle and walkways will provide better access to nature and will showcase the views of our waterways and coastal environment for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to our district.”
