Hastings Does Deco too

It’s not only Napier donning its Deco hat next weekend – Hastings boasts a number of exciting Art Deco events over the extended weekend that are sure to lure visitors and locals alike.

Whether you arrive by car, bus or the famous ‘huff and puff’ steam train that pulls into central Hastings, you are sure to find an event to suit. A combination of free and ticketed events run from Thursday through to Saturday Morning.

The newest kid on the deco block is the ‘Tremains Hastings Hamper Auction’. This is an affordable way to do Deco in style with a group of friends or colleagues. Book a table at absolutely no cost and then bid on Hampers created by local Hastings chefs. With Simon Tremain taking the hammer as Auctioneer, the Bathing Belles in the fountain, vintage cars and music of the era, this promises to be a fun outdoor event in the central CBD Mall. Bidders will dress their own table with prizes for best dressed table and outfits. All proceeds will go to worthy local charity – the U-Turn Trust. Tables are booking fast so secure yours now by calling Andrea on 876 9093.

The Hastings Markets are gearing up for the Art Deco with a real 1930’s flavour. Both markets offer a real event experience at no cost. The Hastings City Night Market is cooking up a storm with ‘deco specials’ from the diverse street food vendors. The night will come alive with entertainment on stage from the brilliant Flukes ukulele band and Art Deco Dixieland style Twin City Stompers as well as the Deco event not to be missed – ‘Costume Capers’ at 6.30pm – a children’s vintage fashion parade. To top the evening off, local historian Michael Fowler will be offering Art Deco guided walks throughout the evening and over the weekend.
