Police praise crowd following Hamilton Cricket match

A brightly coloured, family friendly atmosphere enhancing Hamilton's reputation as the events capital of the country is how the officer in charge of policing the challenge for African cricketing supremacy described the match between Zimbabwe and South Africa this evening.

Waikato Operations Manager, Inspector Karen Henrikson, said both ICC Cricket World Cup organisers and match patrons could be proud of the way the match was enjoyed today.

"Though South Africa took the honours for the match those attending the Seddon Park game can take the credit for an enjoyable and safe event today.

"In total 10 people were evicted from the grounds, eight of them a group that smuggled alcohol into the venue while two men from a stag do, including the groom to be, were escorted out of the grounds but by and large it was a really positive event."

Ms Henrikson said the next match hosted in Hamilton is the India vs Ireland match and the challenge from Police to fans is to make this event an incident free fun day for all.

"The Waikato has a proud history of hosting large scale events from the annual Beach Hop to the Hamilton 400 races, Lions Tour and the Rowing and Rugby world cups.

This current tournament is another jewel in our crown, enhancing our reputation as a region to come to for a really fun, safe time.

"As the crowds leave tonights match heading for home or a night's entertainment, let's keep it a safe and enjoyable Waikato summer."
