Wellington Hosts Conference to End Homelessness

This month, Wellington plays host to the New Zealand Coalition to End Homelessness conference, at which delegates from central and local government and from a wide range of organisations meet to discuss solutions to ending homelessness.

Best practice responses to homelessness will be showcased, including Wellington City’s Te Mahana strategy. Solutions to sustainably ending homelessness and achieving real social change will be explored and a draft Homelessness Solutions Framework will be presented.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will be opening the conference. Councillor Paul Eagle with Iris Pahau, Te Roopu Poutama and Alison Cadman, Dwell Housing Trust will be delivering the keynote speech on the Te Mahana strategy.

“It’s one of my top priorities to end homelessness in Wellington,” says Mayor Wade-Brown. “Through Te Mahana, the Wellington City Council is taking a lead role in coordinating a multi-agency response. By working together we can help those who are homeless and affected by homelessness.”

“Many of us are just a few steps away from homelessness”, says Councillor Paul Eagle. “A lost job, an unexpected health condition, and a personal crisis can create a domino effect resulting in homelessness which is then difficult to get out of. Wellington City Council with our partners is committed to ending homelessness in Wellington and have developed the Te Mahana Strategy providing a vision for the way forward. Homelessness is everybody’s problem and Te Mahana is everybody’s strategy for ending homelessness”.

Waking up to homelessness| Aue! He Nohonga Kore, is a one day conference designed to bring together New Zealanders from a variety of sectors, including local and central government, social, community, education and health to collectively celebrate what has already been accomplished and to consider what needs to be done to end homelessness.
