Wastewater upgrade for Coromandel

Wastewater upgrade for Coromandel

Stage three of a floating wetland and upgraded inlet works were the first two stages of the three-stage upgrade of the Coromandel Wastewater Treatment Plant is to get under way shortly.

A resource consent for the wastewater treatment plant, which has been located on Hauraki Road, Coromandel, for the last 30 years, has recently been renewed. Part of the consent condition is upgrading the Plant to comply with the current standards.

A contract for stage three of the works has been awarded to HG Leach following a tender process.

"Preparation of the site started earlier this month and we estimate the upgrade being completed by late May. Veolia Water is still operating the wastewater treatment plant during the upgrade," says Ian Smith, Water Services Manager.

Stage three includes installation of embankments, pond liners, baffles, a new pump station and a septage waste tank which will improve the capacity of the ponds and will add a further 25 years to the life of the wastewater treatment plant.

During the works, there will be large vehicles used for moving clay spoil for the embankments. This should have minimal effects on residents of Hauraki Road, who we have briefed about the works.

HG Leach is using leftover dirt from the wastewater work to cap the old Coromandel Landfill, instead of using other Council land to store the dirt.
