White Night on in Parnell

White Night on in Parnell

White Night, an Auckland Arts Festival event, is a magical evening of art and exploration that will be held in each of the Auckland city’s major precincts, including Parnell, on Saturday 14 March 2015 from 6pm to midnight. In Parnell, you will get to see almost 20 art installations, performances, galleries and exhibitions in a night like no other.

Parnell Inc. has come together with Curator Sally Lush to create Parnell’s programme for White Night in Parnell. The line-up has been designed to inspire and provide enjoyment for anyone who visits.

The Auckland Arts Festival has made it easy to get around each precinct, with free White Night buses linking each district together. Once in Parnell, you will be able to visit the art galleries and exhibitions whilst exploring the appealing art and installations down the ‘nooks and crannies’ of this heritage area. You will find art and experiences spread the length of Parnell Road inviting you to discover as you walk between venues. A self-guiding map will be available on the night so you see it all.

Near the top of Parnell Road in one of Parnell’s iconic red telephone boxes, you will come across Brendan McGorry’s interactive installation ‘Call me I Still Love You’, the latest work in a series looking at our preoccupation with taking "selfies".

Make sure to look up in the tress at Becca Bolsher’s, ‘Blossom’, a series of multicolored orbs made from plastic tubing and cable ties.

Further down the street you can get lost and entangled in the bone like forms of Audrey Boyle's ‘Subtlehack’ installation that pays homage to the tragedy of young lives lost in the Battle of Messines during World War 1.

Heard Park, in the centre of Parnell, will be alive with dance performances by White Wall, Java Dance and a student group from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. Around the park you will find more artworks including an interactive ‘Light Symphony’ by Blair Fraser and look out for ‘Heard Ledges’ by Carol Green comprising small, unexpected light projections of historical Parnell scenes under the seats.

Wei Lun Ha will create a large artwork, ‘Boundless by Nature’ over the evening as a performance of painting, movement and music opposite Heard Park.

Chill out and relax in Katherine Batchelor’s unique pop up ‘White Night Lounge’ and enjoy her hospitality over the evening.

The Geyser Building, leading the way in environmental building development, will be hosting a work called ‘Respire’ by AUT students. You can interact with this ethereal, floating sculpture that breathes with the Geyser building.

White Night in Parnell will be a visual feast of dynamic art and experiences to entertain visitors of all ages. For more information seewww.parnell.net.nz.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
