Safe Zone attracting record numbers

Safe Zone attracting record numbers

Auckland’s Safe Zone is back – providing haven for late night revellers needing a helping hand.

Now in its third year, the Auckland Safe Zone is a joint initiative between Auckland Council, Accident Compensation Corporation, St John and youth support group Red Frogs NZ, with support from Global Security, Police, the Health Promotion Agency and Heart of the City.

“The idea of setting up a place of safety came about from agencies witnessing the levels of intoxication and vulnerability of people within the central city” says Councillor Cathy Casey.

“The Safe Zone is somewhere for people to sober up, get water, receive support and advice or get minor treatment. We want to help people to stay safe and avoid injury.”

The zone is once again located in Queen Elizabeth Square, Britomart from 10pm to 5am on Friday and Saturday nights.

The zone has been operating for the past two weekends and the crew have been extremely busy dealing with more than 3100 people visiting for social support and hydration, another 28 were assessed and treated by St John.

Aucklanders are encouraged to look out for the Safe Zone and usher anyone needing support to the area.

The Safe Zone will be available every weekend until the end of March.

“It’s that time of year when a lot of people are in the city enjoying the summer. There are a number of events that draw people into town like the Cricket World Cup and the student orientation week.”

The Safe Zone will be available for another four weekends:

· Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March

· Friday 13 and Saturday 14 March

· Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March

· Friday 27 and Saturday 28 March

Safe zone is a team effort – each agency providing their expertise to ensure everyone enjoys a safe night out.
