Two men face firearms related charges after property searches overnight

As part of an ongoing investigation and Canterbury Police’s commitment to disrupt the supply of drugs in the District a series of search warrants were executed on Thursday (5 March 2015) afternoon and evening on a car and at three addresses in Christchurch, two in Waddington and one in Kaiapoi.

Two 38 year old men were arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearms. A 22 year old woman was also arrested for a warrant to arrest. All three will appear in Christchurch District Court today (6 March 2015).

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam, the Officer in Charge of Canterbury’s Organised Crime Unit, explained "The seven search warrants resulted from ongoing Police investigations to disrupt the supply of methamphetamine in Canterbury. Officers recovered two sawn off shotguns, ammunition, methamphetamine and cash from the vehicle and four of the properties.

The two other properties have been secured and guarded overnight ready to be searched today.”

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Cottam says the recovery of two sawn off shotguns is disturbing and illustrates the dangers associated with methamphetamine dealing. “Further charges may be laid due to the nature of the items found during the search.”

Canterbury Police take the supply of drugs and associated crime seriously and will continue to act to prevent the availability of drugs such as methamphetamine reaching the streets in the District.

“Our aim is to prevent the destructive and social harm caused by drugs and in particular methamphetamine dealing" said Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Cottam.

Canterbury Police encourage anyone who can provide information regarding any drug dealing in the District to contact them. Disrupting supply of this destructive drug will help prevent the harm and crime the illegal drug trade supports.
