Hamilton: Op Monsoon update 1

"Op Monsoon update 1"

Hamilton Police investigating the sudden unexplained death of an overseas visitor say keeping an open mind and not ruling out any possibilities of what has occurred is key to their case.

District Crime Services Co-ordinator, Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall, said emergency services were called to the scene on Hillsborough Tce about 1.05am.

"Two men returning home from an "O-Week" event have phoned 111 after finding a man lying in the northbound lane of Hillsborough Tce which runs parallel to the Waikato River

"The male was described as having a serious head injury and was unconscious.

Attempts to revive him at the scene by attending medical staff were unsuccessful and he has died at the scene."

Mr Keall said as a result of this incident a cordon was established and scene guards placed over the scene to secure its integrity before a scene examination could commence.

"That scene examination commenced after first light and is still underway.

Support from the Fire Service is being sought to help us map out the scene and an extensive area canvas is underway which will require reviewing copious amounts of CCTV footage of various parts of the City.

"A post-mortem is will commence in Auckland over coming days and it is here that we hope to be able to complete the formal identification process.

At this point in time all we can confirm is the deceased is a 32-year-old male of dual nationality and we are working with consular officials to build on this."

Mr Keall said a large number of people had been spoken to by Police already this morning and he expected several more would require interviewing.

"The Operation Monsoon team would like to speak to a man and a woman seen embracing outside a property on Anglesea St near and above where the man's body was found.

We believe this couple were of Asian nationality and that they may have seen our victim shortly before he met his death."

"The key thing for us is to keep an open mind and not rule anything out until such time as evidence is available to confirm what has occurred.

Anyone with any information on what has occurred or the identity of the couple mentioned is asked to phone Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200."
