Fires still a risk for Auckland region

Fires still a risk for Auckland region

The extended dry summer season is continuing to make fire a serious risk, especially when managing outdoor fires. The Hauraki Gulf Islands remain in a Total Fire Ban, and Auckland mainland remains in a Restricted Fire season.

“Grass is still very dry and brown, despite the rain we’ve had,” says Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle. “When we get the odd shower, it’s easy to think fire isn’t a risk, but we’ve had a couple of escaped controlled burns in the region.”

The hot and dry summer has increased the risk of vegetation fires, so people should be vigilant around their property, especially around easily flammable material like dry leaves and debris.

If you’re planning to light an open fire in a rural area, you need to apply to Auckland Council for a fire permit. This is free of charge. “We recommend people plan ahead, as permits can take three to five days to issue,” says Bryan.

For information on fire safety and tips for the safe lighting of open air fires call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101 or visit aucklandcouncil/ruralfire.govt.nz

Anyone who sees a suspicious fire should call the fire service immediately on 111.
