HeARTworks project launched

Porirua secondary school students have a unique opportunity to create and learn alongside award winning artist Michel Tuffery as part of a new collaborative project to be launched this evening.

Michel Tuffery MNZM, Porirua City Council and Whitireia Polytechnic are joining forces to deliver an arts driven project ‘heARTworks’, to form part of Porirua City’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

Select students from each of the five Porirua secondary schools will work with Michel on designs using the Gigatown Porirua heart logo.

“The students and myself will explore ways to express what living in Porirua today, means to them through a series of workshops,” Michel Tuffery said.

“During this process we’ll be looking at ways to promote Porirua as a great city to live and work in, it’s multicultural community and highlight its diverse creative talent and business enterprise.”

Deputy Mayor ‘Ana Coffey said the Council was backing the collaboration as part of the City’s 50th celebrations.

“Porirua has had 50 years of unleashing talented artists to the world, it's exciting to collaborate with Michael Tuffery on this project and have another opportunity to showcase the young Porirua artists that will take us into the future."

Businesses are invited to engage with the heARTworks project by sponsoring materials and in return they’ll receive a ‘heARTworks’ design for display at their business premise.

For the greater Porirua community a series of pop-up printing stations is programmed for mid May, in and around the Porirua CBD to enable everyone to view the ‘heARTworks’ designs.

The project will be launched at Whitireia Polytechnic at 6pm this evening. It will run 9 March to 20 May.
