Chance for Landcare groups to network
Chance for Landcare groups to network
Local people taking local actions to enhance or protect the environment is what landcare groups are all about.
Waikato Regional Council, along with Waipa District Council and the Lake Cameron Care Group, are organising a landcare networking field day next month at Rukuhia.
The event will be held in the Rukuhia Community Hall and at Lake Cameron from 9.30am on Thursday 9 April.
“Landcare groups are partnerships where local people work together to take action on local environmental issues,” said regional council sustainable agriculture co-ordinator Bala Tikkisetty.
“People find that being
part of a landcare group helps them to get support from a
range of organisations and sponsors. It also helps with
motivation, as a group effort has a much greater impact than
working alone and it is more fun.”
Common issues
addressed by landcare groups include water quality, erosion,
pest management and native vegetation decline. Waikato
Regional Council can help groups with technical advice and
information, and can provide financial assistance, said Mr
Tikkisetty.
The primary objective of the field day on 9 April is to enable representatives from each landcare group and other community groups to get together and discuss current issues affecting their areas, and to develop an understanding of each group’s programmes and strategies.
Presentations will cover such activities as the monitoring of lake health, koi carp and other pests, plant life, the dynamics of peat lakes and subdivision around them.
Transport will be available from the Waikato Regional Council offices at 401 Grey Street, Hamilton East, for people who want to attend the field day. The transport will depart at 8.45am. To help with transport and catering arrangements, people are asked to reply by Thursday 2 April by calling the regional council on 0800 800 401.
