Council offers to work with developers on kauri tree

Council offers to work with developers on kauri tree

Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse has welcomed a statement from owners of the Paturoa Road sites saying a kauri tree on the property can stay, but has ruled out council purchasing the property.

“I welcome the developers’ offer to enter into a conversation with council and the community,” Penny Hulse said.

“This is clearly a very difficult and distressing situation for them and their family.

“Given their commitment to keep the tree, I hope they will now be given some space to work through this conversation with our staff. And we have asked our best urban and environmental planners to engage with them to see if we can make the site work for them.

“As a council we will be reviewing the process going forward to make sure we are listening to our community effectively, and that we haven't lost touch with critical environmental issues.
