Environment Canterbury seeks feedback on ten-year plans

Public consultation opens on Saturday March 14 on Environment Canterbury’s proposed work programme that supports the council’s Long-Term Plan for the next ten-years.

“We’re proposing to step up some of the work we do, especially to help manage water, air pollution and bus patronage, and have reduced or delayed expenditure in other areas,” said Commissioner David Bedford.

The Consultation Document, which forms the basis of Environment Canterbury’s Long-Term Plan 2015-25, will be delivered into every Canterbury mailbox next week. It sets out the council’s priorities, work programmes and funding proposals for the next decade. Public consultation is open until April 13.

The document proposes an increase in the average rate of 4.5% in 2016. Targeted rates to pay for essential infrastructure, such as stopbanks or service improvements, and passenger transport may also affect some ratepayers benefitting from these services.

Mr Bedford said that these were only proposals at this stage and were open for discussion.

“We’d like to know what people think of our plans, and especially the priority areas of water, air, public transport and public accessibility to information,” he said.
