Gisborne District Council - Cyclone Pam Update

Gisborne District Council - Cyclone Pam Update

Morning all forecast this morning differs in that it start at the top of Eastcape 3 hrs earlier and the wind is now increased to 130-150 which is pretty significant and will cause damage especially in areas exposed to the southeast - south. Preparations have been going well the coasties have been very active getting their people ready. Luckily there was a big hui at Waipiro Bay yesterday with reps form all over the coast so James Palmer our Waiapu Area Co-ordinator was able to spend some time briefing them. Today Civil Defence will be in phone conferences with the National Controller and Minister and later will be having a final planning meeting with the Emergency Services and key utilities.

It has been really good to see people stocking up but as always leaving things to the last minute is not the best solution.

I also want to strongly advise that this is not another Bola, it may be stronger but the impacts will be vastly different. Bola hung around for 3 days and we had a metre of rain up the coast, this thing will be all over in 24 hours and there is only 200mm's rain forecast. This means we are not going to get the main rivers overflowing and covering ever thing in silt. SO it may be more intense but the impacts vastly different.
