Gardens events cover the field

There’ll be something for everyone at events at two of Taranaki’s premier heritage properties on Sunday (22 March).

The events are:

• The annual charity ‘Puffer’ fun run at Pukeiti, 2290 Carrington Rd, New Plymouth, from 10.30am to 2pm. This fundraiser for the Cameron Clow Trust and TET Athletic Taranaki includes a range of events for all ages, and has drawn hundreds of people in previous years.

• A free public workshop on mini orchards at Hollard Gardens, 1686 Upper Manaia Road, Kaponga, from 2pm to 4pm. The session will focus on techniques put into practice in Bernie’s Home Garden, the demonstration and education area at Hollards.

The Pukeiti Puffer is being staged with the support of the Shoe Clinic and TET Athletics Taranaki. Events on the day will include a 2km fun run for children, a moderately challenging 7.3km course for walkers and runners, and the 14.5km ‘challenge’ that includes stream crossings, narrow trails and hills. Entry fees range from a gold coin to $10, and there will be limited registrations on the day. See www.pukeiti.org.nz for more details.

People attending the free workshop at Hollard Gardens will get ideas on how to take a small, sunny space and turn it into a small orchard, using ‘food forest’ concepts and companion plantings. See www.hollardgardens.info for more information.

The fun run and workshop are part of a year-round programme of events, mostly free, at Pukeiti, Hollard Gardens and Tupare, the three heritage properties owned and administered by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region.
