Heightened Profile for Dunedin Walks

Heightened Profile for Dunedin Walks

Dunedin (Monday, 16 March 2015) – Here’s another good reason for slipping on those sneakers.

A new brochure highlighting a range of walks around Dunedin has been produced by the Dunedin City Council and the Department of Conservation.

DCC Community and Environment Committee Chair Cr Jinty MacTavish says, “There are some great comprehensive Dunedin track and trail resources, but in the past we’ve not had one single introductory resource giving locals and visitors a quick snapshot of what’s on offer.

“We're lucky in Dunedin to have seriously spectacular scenery and some very accessible, very special wild places. The Council hopes this brochure will inspire even more people to get out and about and perhaps discover some corners of the city they've not visited before.”

The brochure includes more than 40 walks for a range of abilities. The walks cover areas from Waihola to Waikouaiti and inland from the city. Many tracks are suitable for dog walking and there are beginner and intermediate mountain bike tracks.

Cr MacTavish says historically different agencies were publishing separate information on walking tracks. Most public tracks in Dunedin are managed by the DCC and DOC and about a year ago staff began discussing the idea of a joint brochure.

Representatives from a range of stakeholders, such as Mountain Biking Otago, the Green Hut Track Group, Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club, Otago Regional Council, Police and City Forests had input into the new brochure.

DOC Partnerships Ranger Simon Alefosio-Tuck says, “This project provided a great opportunity for DOC and DCC to work together and produce a brochure that will be of interest to the community.”

Initially, 2000 free brochures have been printed and are available from a range of locations, such as the DCC Customer Services Agency in the Civic Centre, the DOC Visitor Centre and the i-SITE Visitor Centre.
