Backing the BLACKCAPS is the Wellington way

Backing the BLACKCAPS is the Wellington way

The ICC Cricket World Cup has seen Wellington become a hive of activity over the past month, and with the BLACKCAPS taking on West Indies in the quarter final this Saturday, the city is preparing for another big week.

“With a capacity crowd on the cards, I’m delighted to announce we’ll be showing the game live on the big screen at our Village Green Fan Hub in Civic Square, as well as the semi-final on Tuesday next week” says Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

Councillor Jo Coughlan, chair of Council’s Economic Growth and Arts Committee says the quarter final will mark the second time that Wellington Regional Stadium will host a capacity crowd during the Cricket World Cup – the first being the BLACKCAPS v England a few weeks ago.

“A full stadium is great news for Wellington, in terms of both atmosphere at the game and economic benefit for the city” says Councillor Coughlan. “We estimate that the BLACKCAPS v England game brought in between $8-10m to the city, so we are hoping for a similar result this weekend.”

In the lead up to the game, Wellington will be pulling out all the stops, with two days of food, fun and entertainment, capped off with a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour on the eve of the quarter final. There will also be an opportunity for fans to meet the BLACKCAPS at a signing session in Civic Square on Thursday afternoon.

“We are very proud to be hosting the BLACKCAPS in the Cricket World Cup 2015 quarter final against the Windies” says Mayor Wade-Brown. “Volunteers and staff are doing a brilliant job and everyone can enjoy the Capital’s quarter final weekend.”
