Bothamley Park ‘Stream Extreme’ day

Explore Porirua’s stream-life during Bothamley Park ‘Stream Extreme’ day.

Discover the freshwater creatures living in Bothamley Park - Porirua’s green heart - during an open day on Saturday, March 28.

Join school children guiding exploration tours of the park’s abundant stream-life and take part in a stream clean up during Steam Extreme – an open day to celebrate the work being done to restore the park and its waterways that flow into Porirua Harbour.

“This is a great opportunity to see the work being done to restore a wonderful park which connects many of our city’s villages and is critical to the Harbour catchment. It is very important we understand that what we put in our stormwater system drains straight into parks like this one and downstream to our Harbour,” said Cr Bronwyn Kropp, chair of the Te Awarua-o-Porirua and Catchment Joint Committee.

“We all need to take responsibility for what is going into our parks and streams. Fortunately, there is an abundance of fish life, including native fish, in the streams in Bothamley Park. It’s fantastic to see that our hard work is paying off.”

Bothamley Park is one of the biggest reserves in the city, running between Ranui, Aotea, Cannons Creek, Waitangirua and Ascot Park.

During the open day you’ll be able to enjoy a BBQ and learn more about the $800,000 redevelopment programme to restore the park, its walkways and waterways as part of the bigger project to improve Porirua Harbour.

Stream Extreme runs from 10am to 1pm and will be based around the park entrance at the corner of Champion and Windley Sts in Ranui.

The event is a collaboration between Greater Wellington Regional Council, Porirua City Council, Conservation Volunteers and Healthy Harbours Porirua. In case of rain the postponement day is Sunday, March 29.
