Porirua City
Council has purchased the Post Office Building in the CBD as
part of plans to revitalise the city centre.
The
Council intends to urgently progress planning for the
seismic strengthening of the building, positioning it for
future early development by others as inner city
apartments.
Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett said the
Council would be looking for partners to work with to create
inner city living in a strengthened building.
“Inner
city living is an important step in revitalising our city
centre. Apartments down town will mean there are people
needing goods and services – that means cafes and food
shops and more of a buzz in the area.
“Every
successful town centre now has an element of residential and
there’s no reason why Porirua can’t do the same.”
Council has been able to acquire the building from NZ
Post under the Public Works Act.
The building is four
storeys-high with floors of approximately 350 square metres,
with proportions ideally suited for residential
conversion.
