Chips get the chop in Taita deep fryer ban

When the new Taita Sport & Community Centre opens later this year there will be no deep fryers allowed.

The decision to make the healthy choice the easy choice is part of Hutt City Council’s commitment to the Government’s Healthy Families NZ initiative, and something Mayor Ray Wallace is right behind.

“Opening a new community centre with a café is a fantastic opportunity to provide better food options that allow our community to make healthy eating choices, says Mayor Ray Wallace.

“In fact, I’m issuing a challenge to all councils across New Zealand who are in charge of new operations with café and catering contracts to do the same.

“If we’re serious about reducing chronic disease in our communities then that starts with strong leadership and making the best choices easy.”

Hayley Goodin, Healthy Families Lower Hutt Manager, says, “This will be one of many health-promoting initiatives that Hutt City Council is looking to implement as part of Healthy Families NZ.

“The Council was chosen last year as the lead provider for Healthy Families Lower Hutt, a new government initiative that aims to improve people’s health in the places where they live, learn, work and play in order to prevent chronic disease.”

The Taita Sport & Community Centre will likely open in the last quarter of 2015.
