Queenstown Film Society Launches 2015 Season
Queenstown Film Society Launches 2015 Season
QFS is
issuing the call to film fans – starting 21 April don’t
spend your Tuesday evenings on the sofa watching TV.
Instead, get yourself to Dorothy Browns in Arrowtown and
watch 20 top-notch movies on the big screen, how they were
meant to be seen.
Now in its 14th year, the community film group has established a reputation for screening a truly eclectic mix of recent world cinema, classic oldies, cult favourites and the best of New Zealand film.
The 2015 line-up is no exception, including Purple Noon, the iconic French adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr Ripley; modern Italian classic The Great Beauty, winner of the 2014 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; and The Extraordinary Voyage, a documentary about the first ever space film, which will screen alongside its 1902 subject, A Trip to the Moon.
This year also sees a step-up in screening quality. The society first showed scratchy prints on a 16 mm projector in a draughty hall before progressing to 35 mm at Dorothy Browns Cinema, then DVD, followed by Blu-Ray. This year cinephiles will get to see the films in better shape than ever, as for the first time they will be screened through Dorothy Browns’ Barco digital projector whenever possible, and several of the older films will be shown in restored versions.
Screenings take place at Dorothy Browns Cinema in Arrowtown, every Tuesday night from 21 April to 15 September except school holidays. Membership costs $120, which works out at just $6 per film. Half-season membership is available at $70 and 3-film sampler tickets are $35.
