Celebration of new Anzac lawn and redeveloped cenotaph

HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

13 April 2015

Celebration of new Anzac lawn and redeveloped cenotaph this Sunday in Lower Hutt

This Sunday the new Anzac Memorial Lawn and cenotaph area in Lower Hutt will be unveiled.

The public are invited to join Hutt City Council and Lower Hutt Memorial RSA in celebrating the completion of the commemorative area with a formal ceremony and rededication of the cenotaph.

Deputy Mayor and Chair of the City Development Committee David Bassett says the redeveloped area is a significant and appropriate way to honour Lower Hutt’s servicemen and women.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with the Lower Hutt Memorial RSA to ensure we deliver a tribute that will remind generations to come of the sacrifices made by those who served our country in a number of wars, battles and campaigns. It also reinforces the importance of the War Memorial Library which provides a fitting backdrop.

“The flexibility of the area also means while it caters to formal commemorations, such as upcoming Anzac Day services, it is also a place for recreation and activity in other times. This has improved the connection to the War Memorial Library and laid the foundation for further redevelopment of the wider Riddiford Gardens.”

President of the Lower Hutt Memorial RSA Alison Sexton is looking forward to Sunday’s event.

“It will be wonderful to see the work of our members, who have been involved in the project from the outset, come to fruition.

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
