Safer Cycling for Clive Bridge SH2

Safer Cycling for Clive Bridge SH2

Work has just begun on the State Highway 2 Clive Bridge to make crossings safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Hastings District Council Transportation Manager, Jag Pannu, says the current narrow uneven concrete path with its high kerb, is being replaced with a wider, smoother and fenced off path.

“There will be some temporary speed restrictions and narrowed traffic lanes while the work is carried out over the next three months.”

Any times when traffic needs to be halted will be limited to non-peak travel hours and will be restricted to a few minutes only.

“The bridge is an important link on the Hastings to Napier cycle route and popular with both walkers and cyclists. We’re conscious that safety of cyclists on this bridge has been a concern for some time. A wider path separated from traffic by a fence will make using the bridge much safer for everyone.”

Andrew Clibborn, Chairperson for the Clive Community Group said “For several years the Group has lobbied local and national government and roading agencies for improvements to the safety of Clive Bridge users. We are really excited that HDC has let the contract and work is about to start. We hope drivers, cyclists and walkers can be patient and supportive of those carrying out the work.”

Work to add a clip on cycle/walking path to the nearby SH2 Waitangi Washout Bridge has just started. “These two projects will greatly improve the local network of safe recreational pathways,” said Mr Clibborn.

The Clive Bridge cycle path upgrade begins on 27 April and will take about three months to complete.
