Keep Vehicle Access to Mt Eden

Keep Vehicle Access to Mt Eden

Affordable Auckland Mayoral candidate Stephen Berry has asked the Maunga Authority not to vote for a ban on vehicle access to Mt. Eden. “Such a ban will make this treasure inaccessible to Aucklanders with mobility issues, which is disgraceful.”

“Those with disabilities, the elderly, parents with small children and even cyclists will be effectively banned from enjoying the mount.”

The Maunga Authority administers control over Auckland’s 14 volcanic cones. Half of the members are elected officials while the other half are appointed by local iwi. While the Authority is funded by ratepayers, it is not required to consult with them.

“This issue brings to light disturbing facts in regards to the administration of this city. Ratepayers should not be funding unelected, racially appointed collectives who have no accountability to the public.”

Head of the Maunga Authority, Mr. Paul Majurey, is reportedly refusing to give interviews until after the decision has been finalised; a position Mr. Berry has labelled “gutless.”

The elected representatives voting on the Maunga Authority are Christine Fletcher, Chris Darby, Glenda Fryer, Kit Parkinson, Bill Cashmore and Simon Randall.

“This is the sort of vote Aucklanders are sure to remember come election time.”
