Buses on Riccarton Road

Buses on Riccarton Road

The Council today opened consultation on the options for proposed bus priority along Riccarton Road.

“Bus priority along Riccarton Road is a good move for everyone who uses the road,” says Cr Phil Clearwater, Chair of the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee. “We have worked closely with Environment Canterbury to find ways for passengers to reach their destinations on time, and to shorten trip times.”

“Early feedback from our community boards highlighted the need for plans that would improve access and safety for pedestrians and passengers. We also wanted to make the main retail area a much pleasanter place to shop, work and do business.”

Cr Clearwater says bus priority is part of a long-term plan to improve the city’s public transport network, which will in turn encourage more people out of their cars and into buses. Riccarton Road carries up to 3800 bus passengers a day, and is the city’s main public transport route as well as an important commercial area.

The public will be able to comment on the proposed options from 20 April to 18 May. They are:

• two options for central Riccarton from Clarence to Matipo streets

• a single proposal for the area from Deans avenue to Clarence street.

There will also be three drop-in sessions at St Teresa’s Church Hall on the corner of Riccarton Road and Puriri Street open to the public:

• Thursday 30 April 3.30 - 6.30pm

• Wednesday 6 May 4.00 – 7.00pm

• Monday 11 May 4.00 – 7.00pm
