Upgrade closes Northern Gateway road tunnels overnight
Upgrade closes Northern Gateway road tunnels overnight
The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that the Johnstones Hill toll road tunnels will be closed overnight for three consecutive nights from Monday 20 April while work is carried out to upgrade the tunnel’s traffic management systems.
The Agency is asking drivers to allow extra time
for their journeys, with traffic to be detoured 15km along
State Highway 17 between Puhoi and the Silverdale
interchange. The detour will add about 15 minutes to journey
times and the NZ Transport Agency apologises for any
inconvenience.
Another period of overnight tunnel closures with a detour in place is planned for 18 to 21 May.
Transport Agency Auckland and Northland Highways Manager Brett Gliddon says the upgrade work will replace the tunnels’ original ‘backroom’ management system with an expanded version of the Transport Agency’s Automated Traffic Management System (ATMS) which manages traffic and monitors safety systems for the motorway network.
The system provides traffic and incident data to operators in the Auckland traffic control room (ATOC) which monitors traffic flows and manages emergencies for the region’s road network, providing up-to-the-minute information services to the travelling public through a variety of outlets.
