Remembrance in Upper Hutt on Anzac Day

Remembrance in Upper Hutt on Anzac Day

Upper Hutt’s Civic Centre will once again host the city’s dawn service of remembrance.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 21 APR 2015—Upper Hutt’s official Anzac commemorations will begin at 5.30 am on Saturday 25 April. The dawn parade will assemble at the Queen Street carpark and march on at 5.45.

The parade will travel south along Queen Street and make its way to Main Street via Pine Avenue. It will then continue south along Main Street up to Fergusson Drive where it will turn left and follow the road to Upper Hutt’s Civic Centre.

At 6.00 am the service of dedication will begin at the Civic Centre with the traditional firing of the shot. This year’s service will be longer than previous as the community commemorates the centenary of the landings at Gallipoli.

“One hundred years ago, Upper Hutt played a significant part in New Zealand’s contribution to the war effort” says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “Our Trentham and Maymorn camps hosted and trained many soldiers on their journey to fight for their king and their country. As we remember the landings at Gallipoli and the ensuing battles, we salute our soldiers for their bravery and sacrifice. New Zealand and Australian armed forces played a significant role in fighting for the freedom that we enjoy today. Their sacrifice was not in vain, nor will it be forgotten.”
