Get involved in Heritage Week

Christchurch groups involved in preserving the city's heritage are invited to attend a public meeting on 11 May where they can learn how to get involved in Heritage Week.

Christchurch City Council Natural Environment and Heritage Unit Manager Helen Beaumont says the theme for Heritage Week, 9 to 26 October, 2015, will be announced at the meeting, which will be held in Christchurch City Council's function room, 53 Hereford Street at 6pm on 11 May.

"Some of the anniversaries being celebrated this year might give groups inspiration about what they could do for events. For example it is 175 years since the landing of French settlers in Akaroa, 75 years since the first Canterbury troops left Lyttelton for WW2 and 50 years since Christchurch airport became New Zealand's first jet airport.

"In the past, Heritage Week has included lectures, tours, open days, exhibitions and displays, walks and concerts for Christchurch residents and visitors. We are looking forward to hearing some creative ideas to promote the city's heritage this year," Ms Beaumont says.

"We want to actively engage the community in a celebration of our built, social, cultural and environmental heritage," Ms Beaumont says.

The public meeting will include tips on how to create an engaging event and highlights from last year's Heritage Week will be presented.

Heritage Week is an annual event funded by the Council since its inception in 1993. The event had a three-year hiatus due to the earthquakes but was re-launched last year.
