St Lukes Road Bridge Deconstruction

From late April to mid-May the old St Lukes Road Bridge over the Northwestern motorway will be deconstructed and removed. The new St Lukes Road Bridge, was built a number of months ago just to the west of the existing bridge. Traffic was switched to that bridge during the recent Easter weekend.

The now disused bridge will be deconstructed in four sections using an electric saw with a silencing blade and pieces will be moved offsite by large trucks to a licenced facility for disposal.

“The method for deconstructing the bridge has been developed to minimise the impact to road users and the local community while ensuring the integrity of the structure is maintained” says Brett Gliddon, NZ Transport Agency State Highway Manager for Auckland and Northland.

This deconstruction work will take place during night closures over a couple of weeks, when the motorway underneath the bridge can be closed. The road closures will be uplifted by 5am each morning.

A new, higher bridge will be built in its place to ensure height safety clearance for the additional motorway lanes being constructed underneath and a wider bridge to benefit drivers, walkers and cyclists.

The St Lukes Road Upgrade project is jointly funded by the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport and involves widening a two kilometre-long section of the Northwestern motorway and improving the motorway onramps and exits and St Lukes Road and Great North Road intersection and overbridge. Work began in June 2014 and is due to be completed by early 2016.
