New way to city car park via Riccarton Ave from 4 May
If you are driving to the Botanic Gardens or Hagley Park, there will be a new way into the car park, normally accessed over the Armagh St bridge, from 4 May.

While the bridge is being repaired by SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team, Riccarton Ave is the new way to an existing back road, normally used by Hagley Park staff. The road is being upgraded to ensure the car park can be used throughout the six-month bridge repair.

Cyclists and walkers will have access across the bridge throughout the repair.
Pedestrians and cyclists have priority in Hagley Park.

This work will take three to four days to complete.

• The Mt Pleasant Road/Main Road intersection will be closed for one hour periods during the day. Take McCormacks Bay Road and Soleares Ave to access Mt Pleasant Road.

Linwood – big new project about to start
Southern Relief wastewater work starts 29 April – Worcester & Woodham
There is major main trunk wastewater work coming up on Worcester St, east of Linwood Ave, and Woodham Road which will run through to next year. Investigation works will start on Wednesday, 29 April, and the road closure on Worcester St will be in place from 11 May. SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team is liaising closely with residents to ensure they can get in and out of home.
St Albans/ Shirley – new project starts May, Hills Road one-way four weeks
The first stage of repairs to the large northern relief wastewater trunk (ie a major pipe), which runs along Edgeware Road and Hills Road adjoining Edgeware Road are due to start 4 May. (NB: previous work along Edgeware Road in 2012 were emergency repairs, also extensive in nature.)

Hill Road will be one-way northbound only from Dudley St (south of Edgeware Road, near the new Thai restaurant) to Guild St, past the dairy and the florist on the Edgeware Road corner. Southbound drivers will be detoured along Guild St to Slater then Dudley St, back to Hills Road for the four weeks.

Aranui changes
Aranui is the busiest part of Christchurch in terms of SCIRT work sites currently. More resilient vacuum wastewater chambers are going into street berms and the six “arms” of the vacuum system are being installed on streets, then along Pages Road to the new vacuum pump station.

Please see the big map on the new Aranui page of the SCIRT web for street closures and one-ways. This map is regularly being updated. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/aranui-area-update

Sign up for fortnightly area-wide maps
SCIRT’s City Care and Fletcher teams are sending out a fortnightly map and street list via email. They will leave copies at the Aranui Community Trust on Hampshire St and the local library on Aldershot St. Email CIRinfo@fcc.co.nz or scirt@citycare.co.nz to go on the list.

Aldershot St
The corner of Aldershot and Portsmouth St will be closed for a week from Wednesday, 29 April for a vacuum chamber installation and pipe connection.

Carters Road and Breezes Road intersection – emergency work brings closure forward
Carters Road at the Breezes Road intersection was closed this week earlier than anticipated, due to machinery height issues near the power lines. Apologies to residents for the late notice. Access to Carters Road is from Shortland St. The road closure will last about three weeks. Carters Road will only be open at Shortland St to residents while the closure at Breezes is in place. As a result of this closure, Rowses Road has been opened up as detour route.

Breezes Road
Breezes Road is currently one-way southbound only from Rowses Road towards Cuthberts Road. The recommended detour for drivers wanting to go north from the Cuthberts/ Bromley side of Breezes Road is via Shortland St, Rowses Road and back onto Breezes Road.

Bromley/ Maces Road adjoining Aranui
Maces Road remains one-way between Dyers Road and Cuthberts Road. Look for detour signs. The Christchurch City Council road closure on Cuthberts Road has been extended to 4 May, then eastbound to 15 May, then two-way.

SCIRT work sites on Port Hills

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
