Redevelopment works launched at Uxbridge centre
The Uxbridge Arts and Cultural Centre
Redevelopment has officially been launched by the Howick
Local Board and Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated
Board, with a ceremony and blessing by local Iwi, Ngai Tai
Ki Tamaki.
The local board has invested $6.4m for the upgrade with Hawkins now confirmed as the contractor to redevelop the current facilities consisting of a collection of old buildings including the original Uxbridge Presbyterian Church, a hall and a former bowling club pavilion.
Local Board Member Adele White says improvements will include demolishing Keall House, upgrading the historic church and hall, and installing a new café, administration office and more storage along with a purpose-built gallery, lounge, art studios and courtyard.
“Over the years
Uxbridge Centre has grown to become a hub of activity for
community services and arts and culture programmes,” says
Ms White.
“While we mark the end of Keall House, we
celebrate the start of this key local board project after
many years of advocacy and planning alongside the
community.
“These upgrades will ensure the facilities are fresh, fit for purpose, cater to the area’s growing demand, and offer enhanced opportunities for community connections.
“We will be working with current providers to achieve a smooth transition and ensure customers and visitors are kept informed with key information as the developments progress.”
The main construction period begins in June with some classes and services being temporarily relocated at 34 Moore Street, Howick (the former Police Station). For more information on these changes visit the Uxbridge reception or www.uxbridge.org.nz.
Keall House was originally purchased by the Howick Borough Council in 1986 and has accommodated many community services including Te Roopu Awhina o Wairoa, the Red Cross and Auckland East Parents Centre.
