Big turnout at Long Term Plan hearings

Big turnout at Long Term Plan hearings

More than 600 people have signed up to speak at public hearings on Christchurch City Council’s Long Term Plan.

The first of nine public hearings is on Monday and Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the number of people wanting to take part is pleasing.

“We’ve received almost 3,000 formal submissions on the Long Term Plan consultation document which explains what we want to do over the next decade and how to pay for it.

“The fact that more than 600 people have indicated they want to front up and put their views to Councillors in person shows how important this Plan is for the city.”

Topics to receive a significant number of submissions include eastern suburbs issues, asset sales, the proposed financial strategy and rates increases, major cycleways, inner city parking and the stadium.

At Monday’s public hearing in the Council Chamber, community boards, business groups, unions, and political parties will present submissions, copies of which are on the Council website.

Mayor Dalziel says Councillors appreciate the effort that has gone into preparing feedback on the Long Term Plan. “With a $1.2 billion funding shortfall to deal with as a result of the earthquakes there’s a lot to think about, and we’ll be coming to the hearings ready to listen.”

People who want to follow the hearings and are unable to get to the Civic Offices in Hereford Street can watch a live-stream of proceedings atwww.ccc.govt.nz.
