Discover your inner creativity

Discover your inner creativity and learn from New Zealand’s leading artists

Introducing an exciting new event - Art In Action. Art in Action will bring together some of New Zealand’s top artists in a one-off celebration of creativity, giving Aucklanders the chance to discover their inner creativity by getting hands-on experience making art, creating crafts, cooking, and more.

For the first time, Aucklanders will be able to watch a diverse range of leading artists, chefs, potters, and musicians in action. Join Claudia Slaney, Masterchef NZ winner Brett McGregor, Sophie Lankovsky and more as they showcase the art of creating art and experience the joy of taking part. Art in Action is not just about viewing the artists – everyone who attends will have the opportunity to take part in workshops.

Art in Action is part of the annual ARTerslie Art Festival, and will take place from 10am – 5pm on Saturday 13th June at Michael Park School. All of the money raised from Art in Action will help the school to expand their auditorium.

Entry to the event starts at $20 per person, with a special family rate of $60 for a family of four (two adults, two children), which includes 4 Star Tickets to spend on activities. Each Star Ticket is valued at $5. Spaces in Art in Action’s workshops and demonstrations are limited and will fill up fast, so buying in advance at www.artinactionellerslie.com is recommended.

All of the money raised will go towards expanding the Michael Park School auditorium. This will allow the school to install extra toilets and multi-purpose rooms, which in turn will allow them to open up the space as a community facility.

Designed for children and adults alike, Art in Action is open to all - since creativity has no age limit! Everyone may participate in as many of the creative workshops as they like (space willing), with organisers predicting that many families will spend the entire day exploring and learning new things.

Aside from the many workshops on offer, there will also be performances, a gallery, and entertainment throughout the day. You can meet leading New Zealand artists and learn how they make their art, enjoy the many international food stalls, the hangi, or enjoy the spectacular busker Trail where you will find acrobatic acts, music and cultural performances.

Art in Action Coordinator, Clare Williamson, recommends several of the workshops in particular. “I expect that the puppet making and slow motion filming workshops will be popular because they are out of the ordinary and Dede is a spectacular artist. However, the traditional arts and crafts like watercolour and felting will also draw a crowd because they are so popular.”

Meiling Sang, daughter of Ron Sang and acclaimed local mural artist, who has been a key organiser of the event recommends booking into workshops as early as possible, “We have so many activities. Storytelling Through Photography will be popular and Raku Firing course will be as well, since Raku is such a beautiful and interesting type of pottery to learn. I love to see people engaging with their hands and discovering that they can do it. You also cannot miss our Gallery with an original piece from Greer Twiss, full colour reproductions by Michael Smither and other well-known and well-loved artists. You must visit at least 5 times!”

Workshops on the day will include Form Drawing, Spinning, Story Telling, Hummus and Falafel Making, Journal Making for Kids, Buttonhole Making, Yoga, Eco-Dyeing with Plants, Chocolate Dipping, Book Making for Adults, Painting Pet Rocks, Wet on Wet Painting, Wet Felting, Asian Cooking with Brett McGregor, Centrepiece Flower Arrangement, Pastels on Paper and more.

Art in Action will be held at Michael School Park, 55 Amy Street, Ellerslie. The full programme and tickets for Art in Action are available now at www.artinactionellerslie.com.

Art in Action is a Zero Waste event.
